Top That!

Thank the Lords of Kobol 30 Rock is back. I need Liz Lemon in my life. I still contend this season isn’t as strong as those past. The endless parade of guest stars is distracting. Thank heavens Salma has the most amazing breasts I’ve ever seen ’cause her comic timing is all kinds of cattywonkified. But regardless, this shit still swells my pea pickin’ heart with joy.

The highlights:

Tracy in “A Blaffair to Rememblack”

Jenna: “Oh Em Gee Liz, look at you and me and our biological clocks. You’re going baby crazy and I keep getting turned on by car accidents.”

Liz: “Did I mention that we met because I thought he was a baby?”

“Cat sound.”

And the undeniable high point of the episode: Kenneth warming up the TGS audience with a brilliant rendition of “Top That” from Teen Witch, one of the greats of the 80s oeuvre. Lest you’ve forgotten (skip about a 30secs in):

And just cause…

  1. Yes, I felt like the episode was a little stilted (Selma), but it re-introduced me to Top That and well.. that is priceless.

This is for real people! This is not a drill.

  2. Yeah, 30 Rock seems to have suffered a little from the time Tina Fey spent saving the universe with her Palin impresh.

I’m happy for Jack McBrayer and NBC pages everywhere that the Kenneth character has gotten so much play but the rest of the supporting cast have mostly ceased to exist, and instead of SNL alums like Dratch and Dr. Spaceman we get Steve Martin, Oprah, and Salma Hayek’s boobs in a sort of hipster version of The Love Boat.

Agreed re Hayek: one COULD do Shakespeare from that balcony, but preferably not one of his comedies.

Still, it bodes well for the longevity of the show that they are pulling in the big guns for maximum mainstream bounce. Ratings for last season paled in comparison to it’s closest relative, The Office … and something as smart as 30 Rock could easily go the way of Arrested Development or The Ben Stiller Show.

Better to see Fey’s talents — and by this, I mean her boobs — every week than ina film every 2 years, especially if the film is “Baby Momma.” Fey’s talents are more suited to topical comedy than 3-act formula films, even though Mean Girls was admirable, and launched the career of Lindsay Lohan — and by this I mean her boobs.
